Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathic Medicine is a distinct primary health care system that incorporates the art and science of traditional and natural forms of medicine with modern scientific knowledge. The practice of naturopathic medicine involves disease diagnosis as well as treatment and prevention using natural therapies that include botanical medicine, clinical nutrition, hydrotherapy, homeopathy, naturopathic manipulation, traditional Chinese medicine / acupuncture and lifestyle counselling.

A Naturopathic Doctor is a primary care practitioner distinguished by their practicing philosophy, which seeks to restore and maintain optimum health by emphasizing nature’s inherent self-healing process. A naturopathic doctor views the individual from a holistic perspective, incorporating the physiological, structural, psychological, social, spiritual, environment and lifestyle factors affecting the patient. Naturopathic medicine emphasizes disease as a process rather than disease as an entity. The primary goal is to treat the underlying cause of the disease by selecting treatments that are unique to the individual and not simply the symptoms. This approach has proven successful in treating both chronic and acute conditions.

In Ontario, licensed Naturopathic Doctors have at least 7 years of post-secondary education, must graduate from an accredited educational institution, receive their professional licensing from the College of Naturopaths of Ontario (CONO) as well as complete and pass international licensing exams (NPLEX). Naturopathic Doctors in Ontario are regulated under the Regulated Health Practitioners Act (RHPA) alongside medical doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and most other health-care providers in the province.

Intravenous (IV) and Injection Therapy

Vitamins and minerals are essential to the normal functioning of our bodies. They are necessary for our growth, vitality, and general well-being. They are involved in regulating metabolism, help convert carbohydrates into energy, and assist in forming soft tissue and bone. Usually we can get the right nutrients through our diet, however, sometimes even a great diet may not translate to proper nutrition at the cellular level. There can be many causes of this, which may include: poor digestion, food sensitivities, chronic inflammation, poor immune function, or chronic illness, or side effects from drug therapy.

IV involves the administration of nutrients in high concentrations to rapidly aid cellular healing by any of our lovely Naturopathic Doctors. Normally cells in the digestive tract facilitate the absorption of nutrients, however, in IV therapy, the digestive tract is bypassed with the direct infusion into the bloodstream. This allows the cells to rapidly obtain the nutrients needed to repair and regain strength.

Nebulized (Inhalation) Glutathione

Glutathione is a potent antioxidant which acts to prevent damage to important cellular components caused by reactive oxygen species such as free radicals and peroxided. Dr. Mark Hyman, MD calls it "the motherproof all antioxidants, the mast detoxifier and maestro of the immune system".

In medicine, a nebulizer is a drug delivery device used to administer medication the form of a mist inhaled into the lungs via compressed air.

GSH (reduced glutathione) inhalation is an effective treatment for a variety of pulmonary diseases and respiratory-related conditions. Even very serious and difficult to treat diseases yield benefits from this novel treatment. GSH inhalation is very safe. Because many pulmonary diseases and respiratory-related conditions are affected by deficient antioxidant status, poor oxygenation and/or impaired host defenses, glutathione remains an excellent choice for correcting these imbalances. In addition, glutathione is only beneficial for lung conditions when it is delivered directly to the pulmonary tissue – something that can only be achieved using a nebulizer.

Homeopathy is system of medicine based on the principles of “like cures like.” A homeopath views the individual holistically and aims to treat symptoms that occur on a physical, mental and emotional level.

Treatment is aimed at the individual who has symptoms rather than treating just the symptoms themselves, in this way homeopathy is not suppressive or simply palliative but rather treatment aims to address the underlying cause of the symptoms.

The primary goal of the homeopath is to prescribe a carefully selected homeopathic remedy, based on the patients symptoms, to stimulate the body’s healing mechanism to restore balance and health to the individual as a whole.

Homeopathy was identified over 200 years ago by a German doctor Samuel Hahnemann who wanted to understand more about the successful treatment of malaria using Cinchona Bark.

As a healthy person he ingested Cinchona Bark, he continued doing so until he began to experience symptoms, the symptoms he developed were malaria like symptoms - this gave rise to the principle of “like cures like” - if a substance can cause a set of symptoms then that same substance can be used to treat that set of symptoms.

Homeopathic remedies can be made from plant, mineral or animal sources - the chosen source is repeatedly diluted and succussed (shaken) until the desired potentization (strength) is achieved. Homeopathic remedies are so dilute that science refutes their ability to be effective.

Work done by Noble prize winner, Luc Montagnier, uses quantum physics to explain how homeopathy can be effective at these high dilutions. Furthermore, its effectiveness is demonstrated by its successful use for over 200 years in countries all over the world for the treatment of epidemics, acute and chronic disease.

Homeopaths in Ontario are regulated under the Regulated Health Practitioners Act (RHPA) alongside, doctors, naturopaths, nurses and other health care providers in Ontario.

Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic is a regulated healthcare profession that focuses on the skeletal, muscular and nervous systems. Chiropractic care provides a non-invasive, hands-on and drugless approach to diagnosis, treatment and prevention of conditions related to the spine, muscles, joints and nerves of the body. Some common reasons for seeking chiropractic care include:

- Neck pain
- Mid back pain
- Low back pain
- Shoulder pain
- Pelvic or hip pain
- Pregnancy related low back pain
- Headaches
- Repetitive strain injuries
- TMJ dysfunction (jaw pain)
- And more!!

Osteopathy is a gentle, manual, holistic approach with no forceful pressure or cracking, aiming to align the body to promote healing of chronic pain and pathologies. Proper alignment guides the nerves, arteries, veins and lymphatics to travel freely throughout the body and the viscera, which will help with gastrointestinal issues, sinus problems, headaches, mental health and fertility.

Chiropody and Custom Orthotics

Chiropody is a regulated healthcare profession that focuses on the assessment and management of the foot and foot related conditions. These conditions include, but are not limited to diabetic foot care, sports and traumatic injuries, biomechanical assessments and orthotic therapy, pediatric foot conditions and wound care. A referral is not required to consult with a chiropodist who works in a private practice.

What is the difference between a Podiatrist and Chiropodist?

Podiatrists practicing in Ontario studied their profession in the States, as there are no Podiatry program in Canada (other than in Quebec, but courses are taught in French). On the other hand, Chiropodists study in Canada. Another difference is that Podiatrists can perform bone and soft tissue surgery, while Chiropodists are trained to only perform various soft tissue procedures. Both Podiatrists and Chiropodists are Foot Specialists.

*At NatCan Integrative Medical and Wellness Centre, Custom Orthotics are offered by both our Chiropractor and Physiotherapist.*

We are looking for a Licensed Chiropodist to join our fabulous team!!!

Physiotherapy is a regulated health care profession which seeks to assist people in attaining optimal functioning. Registered Massage Therapy

At NatCan, all massage therapy is provided by Registered Massage Therapists. Massage therapy is an important therapeutic tool for relaxation and deep muscular release. Registered Massage Therapy is a regulated health profession in Ontario and is a highly effective therapy for a variety of conditions and general wellness promotion. Massage therapy enhances joint function, improves circulation, increases metabolism and promotes the overall healing process. It is effective for many conditions in which body relaxation and the reduction of swelling and muscle mobilization are required. Massage therapy helps to bring relief from the stresses of everyday living and injury.

More and more Canadians are integrating massage therapy to assist with the physical manifestation of daily stress, seeking relief for a medical condition or complementing other therapies to speed in recovery. Massage is not a luxury. It is a necessity.

Research has shown therapeutic massage relaxes muscles, increases circulation, promotes lymphatic flow, improves healing time of strained ligaments and muscular tissues, reduces inflammation in joints, improves range of motion, reduces ones heart rate and assists in increasing endorphins, the body’s natural way of reducing pain. The principle form of massage therapy performed at NatCan is Swedish massage with several adjunctive therapeutic techniques that can be employed when necessary.

Find out what additional techniques we can offer here.

Acupuncture (Constitutional, Medical and Contemporary) And Cupping

Acupuncture is a common therapeutic intervention derived from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). All of our naturopathic doctors have completed hundreds of hours of training in acupuncture as part of their naturopathic medicine degrees in the form of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Acupuncture involves the use of small, sterile, non-reusable needles as part of a more comprehensive program or for acute conditions. At NatCan, acupuncture is performed by ALL OF OUR NATUROPATHIC DOCTORS as well as members of our physiotherapy and massage team (*only RMT performing Contemporary Acupuncture is Sheri Robinson). Unlike NDs, chiropractors, physiotherapists and massage therapists perform medical/contemporary acupuncture, a system that approaches treatment from a more physical paradigm and not constitutional.

Cupping is an ancient component of TCM treatments. It is particularly effective for addressing muscle or chest congestion. Cupping involves the use of glass or plastic cups that are placed on the body to help increase circulation. This treatment is offered by both Drs. Leanna Campoli and Stefania Iovine, ND and our registered massage therapists.

Ear Candling

Ear candling, also called ear coning or thermal-auricular therapy, is an alternative medicine practice claimed to improve general health and well-being by lighting one end of a hollow candle and placing the other end in the ear canal. Ear candling sessions involve treatment in both ears and is 60 minutes in duration.

Ear Irrigation (Ear Lavage)

Ear irrigation, also known as ear lavage, is a procedure to remove ear wax that can build up in the ear canal and block part or all of it. Ear wax, or cerumen, is a substance with antibacterial properties made by glands in your outer ears. It mixes with dead cells and hair to form a barrier that protects the middle and inner ear from dirt and debris.

If you have too much ear wax, it can be removed either by lavage—flushing out the wax with liquid—or using drops to soften the wax so it can be removed with the help of an instrument, which should only be done by a medical professional.

Why is Ear Irrigation (Ear Lavage) performed? Your ears are designed to be self-cleaning, pushing the wax out as you move your jaw, which then dries and flakes off. However, in some people the wax builds up and can block the ear canal. It can affect anyone, but people who wear ear plugs or ear buds a lot, people with narrow ear canals, and children or older adults are more likely to have excess wax. When there is too much wax, you may have symptoms including:

• Coughing • Discharge • Dizziness • Hearing loss
• Itching • Pain • Tinnitus (ringing in the ear)

Ear lavage is performed by our lovely Dr. Amita Sachdev, ND.
