Understanding the Chakra System: Science, Significance, and Balance

Understanding the Chakra System: Science, Significance, and BalanceWritten By Our In-House Energy Medicine Practitioner: Adelie LaViola

What are Chakras?Chakras are energy centers in the human body, rooted in ancient Indian traditions, particularly within Hindu and Buddhist philosophies and are studied further in The Mystery School Tradition. The term "chakra" comes from the Sanskrit word for "wheel," symbolizing the energy flow through these centers. Traditionally, there are seven main chakras, each associated with specific physical, emotional, and spiritual attributes. Root Chakra (Muladhara): Located at the base of the spine, associated with survival, stability, and grounding. Colour: Red, Crystal: Red Tourmaline Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana): Found in the lower abdomen, linked to creativity, pleasure, and emotional connection. Colour Orange, Crystal: Amber Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura): Situated in the upper abdomen, it governs self-esteem, confidence, and personal power. Colour Yellow, Crystal: Citrine Heart Chakra (Anahata): Located at the center of the chest, associated with love, compassion, and emotional balance. Colour Green, Crystal: Rose QuartzThroat Chakra (Vishuddha): Found at the throat, connected to communication and self-expression. Colour Blue, Crystal: Lapis Lazuli Third Eye Chakra (Ajna): Located between the eyebrows, it represents intuition, insight, and awareness. Colour Indigo, Crystal: AmethystCrown Chakra (Sahasrara): Positioned at the top of the head, symbolizing spiritual connection and enlightenment. Colour White Crystal: Clear QuartzWhile deeply rooted in spirituality, the chakra system has garnered scientific interest regarding energy fields and their impact on health. Research in quantum physics and biofield therapy indicates that the human body emits measurable electromagnetic fields, which may correlate with the energy centers described by the chakra system. Studies have shown that human emotions and thoughts can influence these electromagnetic fields, with positive emotions potentially enhancing them and aligning with the balance of chakras. Furthermore, neuroscience has established a clear connection between emotional states and physical health, revealing that practices aimed at chakra alignment, such as yoga and meditation, can reduce stress, enhance mood, and improve overall well-being. Additionally, alternative medicine practices like acupuncture, which align with chakra principles, have gained recognition in Western medicine for their ability to support physical health by promoting energy flow. The Life Activation is a service offered at NatCan. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  1. Find a Quiet Space: Sit comfortably in a quiet, undisturbed environment. You can sit in a chair with your feet flat on the ground, hands up, ready to receive
  2. Close Your Eyes: Take 3 deep breaths, inhaling through your nose and exhaling through your mouth. Allow your body to relax.
  3. Visualize Each Chakra: Starting with the root chakra, visualize a red light at the base of your spine. Imagine it spinning and glowing brighter with each breath. Focus on stability and grounding.
  4. Move Upward: Progress to the sacral chakra (orange), solar plexus chakra (yellow), heart chakra (green), throat chakra (blue), third eye chakra (indigo), and crown chakra (white). Spend a few moments at each chakra, visualizing the colour and feeling the energy flow.
  5. Affirmations: As you focus on each chakra, repeat affirmations related to the chakra:
    • Root: "I am safe and grounded."
    • Sacral: "I strengthen my will."
    • Solar Plexus: "I am confident and powerful."
    • Heart: "My heart is open and ready to give and receive love."
    • Throat: "I am ready to listen and express myself from a balanced place."
    • Third Eye: "I see the truth and trust my intuition."
    • Crown: "I am connected to the universe and the creator of my life."
  6. Breathe and Release: After visualizing all chakras, take 3 deep breaths, feeling the energy flowing freely. When ready, gently open your eyes.
  7. Reflect: Take a moment to reflect and journal on your experience and any insights gained during the meditation.
