Ear Candling & Ear Irrigation

Two different approaches for ear care — one a traditional holistic therapy focused on relaxation and wellbeing, the other a clinically performed medical procedure for earwax removal. Both are available at our Vaughan clinic.

Ear Candling

Ear candling — also known as ear coning or thermal-auricular therapy — is a traditional alternative medicine practice offered at NatCan as a relaxing, non-invasive holistic experience. During the session, a hollow candle made from natural fabric soaked in beeswax is gently placed at the entrance of the ear canal. The other end is carefully lit and allowed to burn for approximately 15 minutes while you lie comfortably on your side. Both ears are treated within a 60-minute session.

Many clients find ear candling deeply relaxing, describing a pleasant warmth, a gentle crackling sound as the candle burns, and a calming, meditative quality to the experience. It is offered at NatCan as a holistic wellness service for clients seeking a relaxing ear care ritual.

Pricing: $75 for 45 Minutes

Clinical Procedure · Dr. Amita Sachdev, ND
Ear Irrigation (Ear Lavage)

Ear irrigation — also called ear lavage — is a clinically performed procedure for the safe and effective removal of excess earwax buildup. Your ears are designed to be self-cleaning, naturally moving wax out of the canal as you move your jaw. However, in some people wax accumulates faster than the ear can clear it — causing a blocked feeling, muffled hearing, or discomfort. Ear lavage gently flushes the ear canal with warm liquid to dislodge and remove this buildup safely.

At NatCan, ear irrigation is performed by Dr. Amita Sachdev, ND, who assesses each patient before proceeding to ensure the procedure is appropriate and safe for their specific situation.

Naturopathic Assessment required prior to booking.

NEW Ear Lavage Clients must book either:
  1. Walk-In Ear Irrigation (Ear Lavage) - Brief Assessment with Treatment (30 Minutes - $97).
  2. Naturopathic Initial Intake - Comprehensive assessment + other health concerns (90 Minutes - $270). Ear Lavage treatment can be scheduled following this intake and has an additional fee of $67 on top of the intake fee.

EXISTING Naturopathic patients may book the Ear Irrigation (Ear Lavage) Follow Up directly (i.e. 15 Minutes - $67).

Who It's For

Which Treatment Is Right for You?

Both treatments address ear health and comfort, but in very different ways. Here's how to choose.

You want a relaxing holistic ear care ritual

Ear Candling is a traditional, non-clinical experience. Many clients book it as part of their broader holistic wellness routine — seeking the relaxing warmth, calming atmosphere, and meditative quality of the session.

You have a blocked feeling or reduced hearing from earwax

Ear Irrigation with Dr. Sachdev is the clinical option for earwax removal. If you're experiencing noticeably blocked ears, muffled hearing, or know you tend to build up wax, ear lavage is the more appropriate and effective choice.

You frequently use earbuds, earplugs, or hearing aids

Regular earplug and earbud use is one of the most common causes of wax accumulation — it prevents the ear from self-cleaning normally. Ear Irrigation helps safely remove this buildup and restore normal hearing clarity.

You're looking for a gentle, non-invasive ear experience

Ear Candling is a gentle, non-invasive therapy with no instruments inserted into the ear canal. It's a quiet, calming treatment suitable for most adults who are simply looking for an ear-focused wellness experience.

FAQ

Common Questions

What is the difference between Ear Candling and Ear Irrigation? +
Ear Candling is a traditional holistic therapy offered as a relaxing wellness experience — a hollow beeswax candle is gently placed at the ear entrance and lit, creating a warm and calming sensation. Ear Irrigation (Ear Lavage) is a clinical procedure performed by Dr. Amita Sachdev, ND, in which warm liquid is used to flush out earwax buildup from the ear canal. If you are experiencing blocked ears or reduced hearing from wax accumulation, Ear Irrigation is the appropriate clinical treatment.
Is Ear Candling safe? +
At NatCan, Ear Candling is performed by trained practitioners in a controlled clinical environment with proper precautions in place — including a protective plate to catch any ash and careful monitoring throughout the session. The treatment is not performed on children or on individuals with perforated eardrums, ear tubes, or any current ear infection or inflammation. Please disclose any ear conditions at the time of booking.
How long does Ear Candling take? +
The Ear Candling session is 60 minutes in total, during which both ears are treated. Each ear is typically treated for approximately 15 minutes. The remaining time includes preparation, positioning, and a quiet rest period between sides.
Who should NOT get Ear Candling? +
Ear Candling is not recommended for individuals with a perforated eardrum, ear tubes (grommets), an active ear infection, inflammation of the ear canal, recent ear surgery, or known allergy to beeswax or the candle materials. If you are unsure, please consult with your healthcare provider before booking.
Who is Ear Irrigation most suitable for? +
Ear Irrigation is most suitable for adults who are experiencing earwax buildup causing a blocked sensation, muffled hearing, or discomfort. It is particularly relevant for people who frequently use earbuds, earplugs, or hearing aids, those with naturally narrow ear canals, and older adults who are more prone to wax accumulation. Dr. Sachdev will assess your ears before proceeding to confirm suitability.
Is there any downtime after either treatment? +
Neither treatment has any meaningful downtime. After Ear Candling, most clients feel relaxed and may notice a subtle difference in how their ears feel. After Ear Irrigation, you may notice improved hearing clarity immediately. In some cases, temporary mild discomfort or sensitivity may be present for a short time after lavage — this is normal and typically resolves quickly.
