What Is Infrared Sauna?

A Deeper, More Effective Sweat — Without the Suffocating Heat

Traditional saunas heat the air around you using steam or convection, requiring very high ambient temperatures to produce a sweat — which many people find uncomfortable or difficult to tolerate for long periods. Infrared saunas work completely differently.

Infrared light penetrates directly into your body’s tissues, heating you from the inside out rather than heating the surrounding air. This means localized heat is delivered right to the source — producing a deeper, more meaningful sweat at temperatures that feel genuinely comfortable, rather than oppressive.

The result: a more tolerable session that produces better outcomes than a traditional sauna at higher temperatures.

Infrared vs. Traditional Sauna

  • Heat source: Infrared light penetrates the body directly — traditional saunas heat the air and rely on humidity
  • Temperature: Infrared operates at 45–65°C vs. traditional sauna at 80–100°C — far more comfortable
  • Penetration: Infrared heats tissue up to 4cm below the skin surface — traditional heat stays superficial
  • Sweat quality: Infrared sweat contains more toxins and metabolic waste per unit than traditional sauna sweat
  • No steam or humidity: No suffocating feeling — you can breathe normally and stay comfortably for the full session
  • Caloric burn: Up to 600 calories in a 50-minute infrared session

Naturopathic Hydrotherapy Option

NatCan also offers Infrared Sauna as part of a Naturopathic Hydrotherapy program — supervised by our licensed Naturopathic Doctors (Dr. Perfetto, Dr. Sachdev, and Dr. Santos). This approach integrates the sauna into a structured naturopathic treatment plan, with an initial assessment to confirm suitability and set therapeutic goals.

A Naturopathic Hydrotherapy Infrared Sauna Assessment or Naturopathic Initial Intake is required before the first ND-supervised session. See pricing below. Packages and discounts are not available for ND-supervised sessions.

Benefits

Benefits of Infrared Sauna Therapy

Infrared sauna delivers a range of well-documented physiological benefits that make it one of the most versatile and accessible wellness therapies available.

🔥
Burns Up to 600 Calories in 50 Minutes

The heat from infrared sauna significantly elevates heart rate and metabolic rate — producing a cardiovascular and caloric effect comparable to moderate physical exercise. An effective complement to a weight management or fitness program.

💧
Improved Circulation

Infrared heat causes blood vessels to dilate, increasing circulation throughout the body. Improved blood flow supports tissue healing, reduces muscle soreness, and delivers oxygen and nutrients more effectively to every organ and system.

🌿
Deep Detoxification

Infrared sauna induces a deep, metabolically active sweat that releases toxins, heavy metals, and metabolic waste at concentrations higher than those produced by traditional sauna or exercise-induced sweating alone.

🛡
Immune System Support

The elevated core body temperature produced by infrared sauna mimics a natural fever response — stimulating the immune system, increasing white blood cell production, and creating an environment that is inhospitable to pathogens.

🧠
Stress Relief & Nervous System Reset

The warmth of infrared sauna activates the parasympathetic nervous system — promoting deep relaxation, reducing cortisol levels, and leaving most clients feeling profoundly calm and restored after their session.

🤼
Muscle Recovery & Pain Relief

Infrared heat penetrates deep into muscle and connective tissue, reducing lactic acid buildup, relieving joint stiffness, and accelerating recovery after physical activity or injury — making it a popular tool among athletes and active individuals.

Your Session

What to Expect at Your Infrared Sauna Session

Infrared sauna sessions at NatCan are simple, comfortable, and completely self-directed. Here is what to expect:

Step 01

Book Online

Select your session type (30 or 50 min, 1 or 2 people) and preferred time. Tuesday and Friday sessions qualify for the 50-for-30 promotion. Book well in advance on popular promo days.

Step 02

Arrive & Prepare

Arrive well hydrated. Bring or use the provided towels. Wear minimal clothing or a swimsuit inside the sauna. Avoid eating a heavy meal immediately before your session.

Step 03

Your Session

Relax inside the infrared sauna for your chosen session length. You will begin to sweat meaningfully within the first 10–15 minutes. Sessions are private and comfortable — you can listen to music, meditate, or simply rest.

Step 04

Post-Session Care

Allow time to cool down and rehydrate thoroughly after your session. Many clients feel deeply relaxed and lighter after. Avoid cold showers immediately — allow your body temperature to return to normal gradually.

What Our Clients Are Saying

★★★★★

“I have been coming to NatCan for the infrared sauna every Tuesday and Friday for the promotion and it has become one of the highlights of my week. The difference in how my body feels — less tense, less bloated, more energized — is genuinely noticeable. I can’t recommend it enough.”

Adriana M.Infrared Sauna · Woodbridge Clinic
★★★★★

“My ND recommended infrared sauna as part of my naturopathic hydrotherapy plan and the results have been impressive. I was sceptical at first but the deep sweat at comfortable temperatures is completely different from a gym sauna. I feel like I’m actually doing something meaningful for my body every session.”

Marco S.Naturopathic Hydrotherapy Sauna · Woodbridge Clinic
★★★★★

“My partner and I book the 2-person session on Fridays for the promotion and it has become our weekly reset ritual. The sauna is private, clean, and genuinely comfortable — not the suffocating experience we expected. We always leave feeling incredible. The Tuesday / Friday deal is unbelievable value.”

FAQ

Common Questions About Infrared Sauna

What is the difference between infrared and traditional sauna?
Traditional saunas heat the air around you to very high temperatures (80–100°C) using steam or heated rocks, and rely on the hot, humid environment to raise your body temperature. Many people find this oppressive and difficult to tolerate. Infrared saunas emit wavelengths of light that penetrate directly into your body tissues — heating you from the inside out at much more comfortable temperatures (45–65°C). This direct heating produces a deeper, metabolically richer sweat at a fraction of the ambient temperature, without the suffocating humidity of a traditional sauna. The result is a more comfortable experience that many clients find easier to sustain for the full session — and that produces more meaningful detoxification outcomes.
Who should avoid infrared sauna or check with a doctor first?
Infrared sauna is safe for most healthy adults, but certain individuals should consult their physician or naturopathic doctor before booking: those who are pregnant, have a history of cardiovascular disease, pacemakers or implanted devices, uncontrolled blood pressure, active fever or acute illness, multiple sclerosis or conditions that impair sweating, or those who are on medications that affect heat tolerance. If you are unsure whether sauna is appropriate for your specific health situation, we strongly recommend booking a Naturopathic Hydrotherapy Infrared Sauna Assessment with one of our NDs — they will review your health history and confirm suitability before your first session.
How often should I use the infrared sauna?
For general wellness and stress relief, most clients benefit from 2–3 sessions per week. For therapeutic goals such as detoxification, weight management, or muscle recovery, daily or near-daily use can be appropriate for many people. Your body will adapt over time — most clients find they sweat more freely and feel comfortable staying longer as their sessions progress. If you are using sauna as part of a naturopathic hydrotherapy plan, your ND will recommend a specific frequency based on your health goals and response to treatment.
What is the Tuesday and Friday promotion?
Every Tuesday and Friday, NatCan offers a special infrared sauna promotion: book a 50-minute session at the 30-minute price. That means $45 for one person (regular $75) or $70 for two people (regular $100). Book online to secure your spot — this is our most popular promotion and Tuesday and Friday slots fill quickly. The promotion applies to standard infrared sauna sessions, not naturopathic hydrotherapy ND sessions.
What are packages and how do they work?
NatCan offers package pricing for clients who want to commit to a regular infrared sauna routine. Packages provide better per-session value than paying individually and are available for all session types — 1 or 2 people, 30 or 50 minutes. Call 416-400-6280 Ext. 2 to discuss current package options and find the plan that best matches your frequency and goals.
What is Naturopathic Hydrotherapy Infrared Sauna and do I need it?
Naturopathic Hydrotherapy Infrared Sauna is a supervised version of the standard sauna session, offered by NatCan’s Naturopathic Doctors as part of a therapeutic treatment plan. It includes a 15-minute ND check-in before each sauna session and is integrated into your broader naturopathic care. It is not required for most clients — standard self-directed infrared sauna sessions are perfectly appropriate for general wellness, detox, fitness, and stress relief. Naturopathic Hydrotherapy is specifically for clients whose ND has recommended sauna as a targeted therapeutic intervention as part of their naturopathic treatment plan. An introductory assessment or initial naturopathic intake is required before your first ND-supervised session.
