Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy

Pelvic floor physiotherapy is a specialized area of physiotherapy focused on optimizing the health and function of the pelvic floor muscles — the group of muscles that support the pelvic organs, bladder and bowel control, and sexual function.

At NatCan, our approach is comprehensive, compassionate, and client-centred. We understand the sensitive nature of pelvic health concerns and create a comfortable, supportive environment where you can feel confident throughout your entire treatment journey. We believe in empowering individuals to take an active role in their healing.

Using manual therapy, pelvic floor exercises, biofeedback, education, and lifestyle modifications — we address the underlying factors contributing to pelvic floor dysfunction, not just the symptoms.

  • Urinary or fecal incontinence (leaking)
  • Pelvic pain — chronic or acute
  • Pelvic organ prolapse
  • Sexual dysfunction or pain with intimacy
  • Pregnancy preparation & prenatal care
  • Postpartum healing & recovery

Your First Visit

What to Expect at Your Physiotherapy Appointment

Your first physiotherapy appointment is an assessment session — your physiotherapist needs your full history and a physical examination before beginning treatment.

Step 01

Health History & Intake

Your physiotherapist takes a comprehensive history of your condition, previous injuries, medications, lifestyle, and goals. This informs every part of your assessment and treatment plan.

Step 02

Physical Assessment

A thorough examination of your movement, strength, posture, and function. For pelvic floor, this may include an internal assessment (with full consent and explanation at every step).

Step 03

Diagnosis & Treatment Plan

Your physiotherapist explains their findings and outlines a clear, personalized treatment plan with realistic goals and a timeline. You will know exactly what the plan is and why.

Step 04

Treatment Begins

Treatment often begins within your first appointment. Follow-up visits build on each session — your physiotherapist adjusts your plan based on how you respond and progress.

FAQ

Common Questions About Physiotherapy & Pelvic Floor Care

Do I need a referral to see a physiotherapist?
No — physiotherapists are primary care providers in Ontario and you do not need a referral from your family doctor to book an appointment. You can book directly through our JaneApp online booking system or by calling our clinic at (416) 400-6280 Ext. 1. However, some insurance plans may require a physician’s referral for coverage purposes — we recommend checking your plan before booking.
Is physiotherapy covered by insurance?
Most extended health benefit plans in Ontario include physiotherapy coverage.  Receipts are provided for all sessions for insurance purposes. We recommend checking your plan before your first appointment to understand your coverage limits.
What is pelvic floor physiotherapy and who is it for?
Pelvic floor physiotherapy is a specialized area of physiotherapy that assesses and treats the muscles of the pelvic floor — the group of muscles that support the pelvic organs, bladder, bowel, and sexual function. It is appropriate for people experiencing urinary or fecal incontinence (leaking), pelvic pain, pelvic organ prolapse, sexual dysfunction or pain with intimacy, and for individuals navigating pregnancy or postpartum recovery. It is also valuable as preventative care before and after childbirth.
What happens during a pelvic floor physiotherapy assessment?
Your first pelvic floor physiotherapy appointment begins with a comprehensive health history and discussion of your symptoms and goals — with no physical examination until you are fully informed and have given consent. The assessment may include an external examination of posture, breathing, and movement, and may also include an internal vaginal or rectal assessment to directly evaluate the pelvic floor muscles. Your physiotherapist will explain every step in detail, answer all questions, and only proceed with your full understanding and consent. Everything is done at your pace.
Is pelvic floor physiotherapy only for women?
No — pelvic floor dysfunction affects people of all genders. While pelvic floor physiotherapy is commonly associated with pregnancy, postpartum care, and women’s health, it is also appropriate for men experiencing pelvic pain, urinary incontinence, post-prostate surgery rehabilitation, or other pelvic health concerns. Please contact us if you have questions about whether pelvic floor physiotherapy is appropriate for your specific situation.
How many physiotherapy sessions will I need?
This depends on your specific condition, how long you have had it, and how you respond to treatment. Some patients experience significant improvement within 4–6 sessions. Others with more complex or chronic conditions may benefit from a longer course of care. Your physiotherapist will give you a realistic treatment plan with a timeline at your assessment appointment, and will review your progress at every visit to keep you on track.
Can I see a physiotherapist alongside other NatCan practitioners?
Absolutely — and this is often where the most meaningful results happen. At NatCan, our physiotherapists work alongside our naturopathic doctors, chiropractor, osteopath, and registered massage therapists. Many patients see multiple practitioners at NatCan and benefit from the coordinated, team-based approach to their care. Your physiotherapist can communicate with other members of your care team as appropriate.
