What Is Registered Massage Therapy?

A Regulated, Evidence-Based Approach to Therapeutic Massage

Registered Massage Therapy is a regulated health profession in Ontario — not a spa service. RMTs are trained to assess and treat musculoskeletal conditions, support rehabilitation, and promote overall wellness through evidence-based hands-on techniques.

At NatCan, the principal form of massage therapy is Swedish massage — with several adjunctive therapeutic techniques available when clinically indicated. More and more Canadians are integrating massage therapy into their regular healthcare routine, recognizing that it addresses not just the physical manifestations of stress but also the underlying conditions that prevent the body from healing and functioning optimally.

Massage is not a luxury. It is a necessity.

What Research Shows About Therapeutic Massage

Evidence from clinical research demonstrates that therapeutic massage delivered by a Registered Massage Therapist produces measurable, meaningful health outcomes beyond simple relaxation.

  • Relaxes muscles and reduces chronic muscle tension
  • Increases circulation and promotes lymphatic flow
  • Improves healing time of strained ligaments and soft tissue
  • Reduces inflammation in joints and improves range of motion
  • Lowers heart rate and supports nervous system regulation
  • Increases endorphins — the body’s natural pain reducers
  • Enhances joint function and overall metabolic healing

Integrated with Your NatCan Care Team

At NatCan, massage therapy is not delivered in isolation. Our RMTs work alongside our naturopathic doctors, physiotherapists, chiropractor, osteopath, and acupuncturist — so your massage therapy is coordinated with your broader health goals and treatment plan.

Many of our patients find that combining RMT with naturopathic care, acupuncture, or physiotherapy produces significantly better and more lasting results than any single therapy alone.

Our Services

Massage Therapy Services at NatCan

NatCan offers a range of massage therapy services delivered by our Registered Massage Therapists at both clinic locations. Available services vary by location and practitioner.

Both Clinics · Nikki & Sheri
Swedish & Therapeutic Massage

The foundation of our massage therapy offering — Swedish massage combined with adjunctive therapeutic techniques where clinically indicated. Whether you need deep muscular release, treatment for a specific injury or condition, or relief from the physical effects of daily stress and tension, our RMTs design each session around your specific presentation and goals.

Sessions range from 30 to 90 minutes. Your RMT will recommend the ideal length based on your treatment goals at your first appointment.

Available at Vaughan (Nikki) and Woodbridge (Sheri) · Insurance eligible
Both Clinics · Nikki & Sheri
Pre-Natal Massage

Specialized massage therapy designed for the unique physical changes and discomforts of pregnancy. Pre-natal massage at NatCan uses positioning, pressure, and techniques that are safe and effective throughout pregnancy — addressing back pain, hip tightness, swelling, sciatic pain, and the general physical demands that pregnancy places on the body.

Sessions are available at the same price points as regular massage. Please let your RMT know your stage of pregnancy when booking so they can prepare appropriately.

Available at Vaughan (Nikki) and Woodbridge (Sheri) · Insurance eligible
Woodbridge Only · Sheri Robinson
Hot Stone Massage

Hot stone massage uses smooth, flat, heated basalt stones placed on specific areas of the body alongside hands-on massage techniques. The heat from the stones penetrates deeply into muscle tissue — allowing for greater muscular release with less pressure, improved circulation, and a profoundly relaxing experience.

Stones may be placed along the spine, on the stomach, chest, or limbs — and can also be used as tools during the massage itself. Available in 30 to 90-minute sessions at a slight premium over standard massage rates.

Available at Woodbridge (Sheri) only · Insurance eligible as RMT service
Woodbridge Only · Sheri Robinson
Massage with Contemporary Acupuncture

The best of both worlds — a full massage therapy session combined with Contemporary Acupuncture, which involves the insertion of very fine needles over carefully selected areas where nerves and their receptors are found. This can be performed with or without electrical stimulation.

Contemporary Acupuncture approaches treatment from a physical, neurological paradigm rather than a constitutional TCM approach — making it a natural complement to massage therapy. All treatments are billed as massage therapy and are fully insurance eligible under your RMT benefits.

Available at Woodbridge (Sheri) only · Insurance eligible as RMT service · 60 or 90 minutes

Why Registered Massage Therapy

Why Choose Registered Massage Therapy at NatCan

Massage therapy at NatCan is not a spa experience — it is clinical, regulated, insurance-eligible therapeutic care delivered as part of an integrated health approach.

🤟
Regulated Healthcare — Not Spa Massage

RMTs in Ontario are regulated health professionals who have completed a rigorous academic and clinical training program. Their work is evidence-based, assessment-driven, and coordinated with your broader healthcare team — producing outcomes that go far beyond relaxation.

🏅
Insurance Eligible

All massage therapy sessions at NatCan are performed by Registered Massage Therapists and are eligible for coverage under extended health benefit plans. Most plans include meaningful RMT coverage — receipts are provided for all sessions for direct submission or reimbursement.

💧
Relieves Chronic Pain & Tension

Swedish massage with adjunctive therapeutic techniques effectively reduces chronic muscle tension, joint stiffness, and the musculoskeletal pain that builds from postural stress, overuse, injury, and daily life — often providing relief that accumulates with regular treatment.

🏃
Supports Injury Recovery

Registered massage therapy promotes healing of strained ligaments, muscular tears, and soft tissue injuries by increasing local circulation, reducing inflammation, and improving the metabolic conditions that the body needs to repair damaged tissue effectively.

🧠
Nervous System & Stress Relief

The physical manifestations of stress — elevated heart rate, muscle tension, headaches, poor sleep — respond measurably to therapeutic massage. Regular RMT sessions help regulate the autonomic nervous system and build resilience to the daily stressors that accumulate over time.

Integrated with Your Full Care Team

At NatCan, your RMT communicates with your naturopathic doctor, physiotherapist, chiropractor, and osteopath as needed. This means your massage therapy is always informed by and aligned with your broader health plan — not delivered in isolation.

“I have been seeing Nikki for massage therapy at NatCan and she is absolutely wonderful. She listens carefully, adjusts based on what my body needs that day, and I always leave feeling significantly better than when I arrived. The combination of RMT and my ND appointments has been life-changing for my chronic back pain.”

Sandra M.Registered Massage Therapy with Nikki · Vaughan Clinic

“Sheri is exceptional. I tried the massage with contemporary acupuncture and it was unlike anything I had experienced before — the combination addressed my shoulder tension in a way that regular massage alone never had. The whole Woodbridge clinic team is outstanding.”

FAQ

Common Questions About Registered Massage Therapy

What is the difference between an RMT and a spa massage therapist?
Registered Massage Therapists (RMTs) are regulated health professionals in Ontario who have completed a 2–3 year college program in massage therapy, passed provincial licensing exams, and are registered with the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (CMTO). They are trained to assess and treat musculoskeletal and other health conditions, and their work is held to clinical and ethical standards regulated by law. Spa massage therapists do not hold regulated status and are not required to have the same level of training, assessment skills, or clinical knowledge. Only RMTs can provide massage therapy receipts that qualify for insurance coverage under extended health benefit plans.
Is registered massage therapy covered by insurance?
Yes — all massage therapy at NatCan is performed by Registered Massage Therapists and is eligible for coverage under extended health benefit plans that include RMT services. Most employer-provided benefit plans in Ontario include RMT coverage, often ranging from $300–$1,000 or more per year. Receipts are provided for every session for direct billing or self-submission to your insurer. We recommend checking your specific plan for coverage amounts before booking.
How often should I get a massage?
This depends on your goals and health situation. For acute injury or post-surgical recovery, more frequent sessions (once or twice weekly) are often recommended initially and reduced as you progress. For chronic pain and tension management, bi-weekly or monthly maintenance sessions are common. For general wellness promotion and stress management, many people benefit most from regular monthly sessions. Your RMT will recommend a treatment frequency based on your specific situation at your first appointment.
Is pre-natal massage safe during pregnancy?
Yes — pre-natal massage performed by a trained Registered Massage Therapist is safe and beneficial throughout pregnancy, with appropriate modifications to positioning, pressure, and technique at each stage. Both Nikki and Sheri offer pre-natal massage. Many pregnant clients find massage therapy provides meaningful relief from back pain, hip tightness, sciatic pain, and swelling that are common discomforts of pregnancy. Please inform your RMT of your stage of pregnancy and any pregnancy-related health considerations when booking.
What is Contemporary Acupuncture and how is it different from TCM acupuncture?
Contemporary Acupuncture (offered by Sheri Robinson at Woodbridge) involves the insertion of very fine needles over carefully selected areas where nerves and their receptors are found, approaching treatment from a physical and neurological paradigm rather than a Traditional Chinese Medicine constitutional approach. It can be performed with or without electrical stimulation and is combined with massage therapy in a single session. All treatments are billed as massage therapy and are fully insurance eligible under your RMT benefits. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) acupuncture, offered by Alisa Cesselli R.Ac. and our NDs, takes a constitutional approach rooted in TCM theory.
Do I need a referral to book massage therapy?
No — you do not need a referral from your family doctor to book a massage therapy appointment at NatCan. RMTs are primary care providers and new patients can book directly through our JaneApp online booking system or by calling our clinics. If your extended health plan requires a physician referral for coverage, we recommend checking with your insurer before booking.
